A New Riff On An Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is one of the simplest, most reliable bourbon cocktails out there. New Riff’s New Fashioned sticks to the classic recipe but makes a couple of small tweaks that bring out the best in their bourbon.
The main difference is the use of Demerara syrup instead of a sugar cube or traditional simple syrup. It typically adds a deeper sweetness compared to regular simple syrup. This recipe also swaps traditional bitters for orange bitters, which highlight the citrus and spice notes in New Riff’s high-rye bourbon.
The Recipe:
New Fashioned
• 2oz New Riff Bourbon
• 1/2oz Demerara simple syrup (recipe below)
• 2 dashes orange bitters
Instructions:
1. Add bourbon, Demerara syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.
2. Stir until well-chilled.
3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
4. Garnish with an orange peel and a Luxardo cherry. My favorite is Traverse City Whiskey’s Premium Cocktail Cherries.
Demerara Simple Syrup
• 1/2 cup raw sugar
• 1/2 cup water
Heat sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves. Simmer for a minute, then remove from heat and let cool.
New Riff Bourbon’s high-rye mash bill (30%) adds spice and depth, which balances well with the richness of Demerara syrup and the brightness of orange bitters. It’s still an Old Fashioned at heart with a small adjustment and a name that’s unique to the brand.
